It has been a pleasure to see how well all the children have settled back into school life and we extend a particularly warm welcome to all our new starters and their families throughout the school. All our new staff have slotted into the Gateway team really well and are working hard to get to know the children and all our routines. I know all the class/form teachers are looking forward to meeting their children’s parents at our Meet the Teacher events next week.
Having now completed a full week, all the children have enjoyed the broad range of opportunities available to them in this academic year. The specialist subjects taught by our dedicated team of teachers help many children to settle quickly and to relish the variety in their day. We have broadened the Year 6 curriculum by offering them the opportunity to study Classical Civilisation and Critical Thinking. Both subjects were very well received last year so have been happily repeated this year. Mr Atkinson, Head of Pastoral Care, will also be teaching a lesson of Mindfulness to all year 5 and 6 classes this year. Mindfulness is an important life skill which will help the children to focus their mind and provide them with practices that they can use when they are feeling worried or anxious about something. The course also helps the children to understand about the different parts of the brain and how we use our brain to make decisions. When not involved in their Mindfulness lessons, these senior pupils are spending a lesson supporting our younger pupils in the playground and the dining hall. They are super keen to get involved and have had really good ideas about how to help. I am sure this will go from strength to strength.
The exciting range of After School Clubs at Gateway is another firm favourite with the children and all these activities enable our children to try different activities and to enjoy getting to know pupils from different classes and year groups. There are 64 clubs running this term!
As many of you know, this Thursday saw many of our hardworking Year 6 pupils sitting the Bucks 11+ exam. They all coped brilliantly with the morning and I know they will all have done their very best which is all any of us can ask. I am sure they are looking forward to having the exam done and out the way.
All the staff have been delighted to see the children making good use of our new playground markings and the seating areas under the shelter. We are very grateful to the FOG team for all the super fund raising events last year which have enabled these additions to the grounds. I know that Mrs Grant and her team have many more great events planned for us throughout the academic year.
I wish you all a relaxing weekend. I am sure the children, and staff, will be ready for the weekend by the end of this busy first week.
