Here at Gateway, it is our firm belief that education is not just about academic success and so far this term, we have celebrated a fantastic range of achievements on the sports field which we believe are a real testament to our outstanding sports provision for pupils.
So far this term, 72 teams have competed across 6 different sports, with over two-thirds of the children in Years 3 to 6 representing the school. Successes have included retaining the Aperghis Cup in cross-country, winning the Year 5 section of the London North Girls Football Tournament and having three children qualify for the National ISA Swimming Finals. This is only a snapshot of the sporting achievements so far this year and there are many more opportunities for our children coming up over the next two terms.
Whilst success in competition is important, our primary focus at Gateway is on participation for all. The importance of participation in physical activity for developing young people’s physical health and emotional well-being and the subsequent link to academic achievement are well documented. Well taught PE lessons can provide the children with:
Communication and Trust
Fairness and Respect
Acceptance of Responsibility
The Association for Physical Education has shared the following statistics regarding participation in PE:
• An 11% boost in SATS results has been linked to programmes that directly improve pupils’ social and emotional well-being
• Pupils engaging in self-development opportunities including sport and physical activity achieve 10-20% higher GCSEs
So, as you can see, it’s the taking part that really counts, which is why we place great emphasis on providing a vast range of opportunities for all of our pupils.
