Home » Year 3 learn the grid method for multiplication
In Maths this week, the Year 3 children have been learning the grid method for multiplication. They started by multiplying a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. This involves them partitioning the two digit number into tens and units, for example 43 becomes 40 + 3. They then needed to multiply the tens and then the units, once they had done this they could recombine the number, as shown below:
Many of the children understood the process really well, the sticking point for many was the multiplication itself. The children need to be working on the tables as much as possible at home. Focussing on the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8! Knowing their tables will really help them!
The children have particularly enjoyed being the teacher. The children were given some grid method multiplication that the teachers had spent a long time on at home and they had to mark it! They needed to give their teachers advice on how they could improve their work and where they had gone wrong. By doing this, the children were showing how well they understood the process.
If you are ever unsure of the methods that the children have been taught in Maths, please come and see a member of the Year 3 team and we will happily go over it with you.
