Home » Year 5 peer into the intriguing thoughts of Joseph Wright of Derby
At first view the painting, ‘An Experiment on a bird in an air pump’ by Joseph Wright of Derby, appears to be a simple portrayal of a scientific investigation. Next we peer intriguingly at the sitters in the painting, who were in fact friends of the artist. We discern their expressions to provide us with clues as to their thoughts and emotions.
This painting has ‘layers’ of thinking. It is challenging.
To understand its importance, you have to familiarise yourself with the life of Joseph Wright of Derby and that is just what Year 5 have been doing!
The use of light and shadows are significant. The entire ‘theme’ of the painting is ‘The Enlightenment’ and calls the audience to consider not only the profound good that scientific knowledge brings but also its terrors.
Even today aspects of science can be controversial.
And so Year 5 have been reasoning and researching.
Here are just a few descriptions of the life and times of the artist but we hope you will enjoy viewing all the work at the forthcoming ‘Take One Picture’ exhibition.
