Year 1 - Fantasy, farming and big numbers

Another busy week in Year 1! This week in Maths we have focused on numbers to 100 and found that a 100 square is really helpful for a number of reasons. We found that a 100 square can help us with counting forwards and backwards, counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s and can help us find 10 more and 10 less than a given number.

In English we used our imaginations and transported ourselves to another world. We explored the story Jack and the Beanstalk and gathered ideas of what Jack saw once he had reached the top of the beanstalk. The children had some fantastic ideas such as; a world filled with sweets, unicorns and candyfloss.

We continued our Food and Farming topic this week by sorting fruits and vegetables into those that grow underground and those that grow above the ground. We had a great discussion about where we buy our food from and talked about how different fruits grow in various seasonal conditions. Children also found it interesting that we import certain fruit and vegetables from all around the world.

In Learning for Life we started to think about changes we have noticed within ourselves. Children listed all the changes they have experienced from when they were a baby, to when they were in Reception to their current time in Year 1. This is a great start to our new ‘Changing Me’ topic as it allows the children to discuss change that is significant and noticeable to themselves.

We are looking forward to our last swimming lesson next Monday. The children have really enjoyed being in the water and have made great progress in a short amount of time.
