Year 1 hunt for the Gruffalo

It’s another busy week in year one! In English we have been on the hunt for the Gruffalo…! We introduced this week’s book, searching for The Gruffalo in the forest school area and saw scratch marks on the tree, a log pile, possibly some Gruffalo footprints and a few chewed leaves and nuts! This sparked the children’s imagination and they wrote and illustrated a Wanted poster to warn the rest of the school to look out for his ‘ terrible teeth, poisonous wart on the end of his nose and purple prickles’ whilst playing in the ‘deep dark wood!’ They then added labels to illustrate their pictures and adjectives to make their work more exciting.

In Maths we practised learning one more and one less when counting. We then learnt how to compare larger and smaller numbers and use the symbols < and >. Our busy week concluded in a very enjoyable Roald Dahl Day celebration where year one activities were based on the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory… and which might have involved tasting different kinds of chocolate, all in the name of science, of course!
