Year 1 - Story studies and recycling

Welcome back everyone. We hope you all had a great Christmas and are ready and raring for 2022! The children entered the classrooms full of beans on their first day back and their lust for learning continues into the New Year! We have had a great first week and half back and have already been involved in many exciting experiences. The children have been so excited to start their swimming lessons and our first session went very well. Everyone was able to change quickly and sensibly, looking after their own belongings and listening attentively to the swimming teachers to ensure a fun and safe time was had by all.

In our English lessons we have been studying the story ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward. Each book study lasts for two weeks which enables us to cover many different aspects including, story structure, characters, story innovation and opinions about the text. We are enjoying the beautiful illustrations in the book and investigating how they differ at the start of the story to the end of the story. We have thought of adjectives to describe both settings which really got us all thinking! In Maths, we have been using our number bond knowledge to work out addition sums up to 20. We have been looking at different strategies to help us work out the answers, including counting on, number bond facts and practical aids such as counters and ten frames. The children have been so excited to be learning all about recycling through the introduction of the topic ‘Houses and homes’ this term. They have been eager to tell us all about the recycling bins they have at home and what items they would put in each one. This topic fits nicely alongside our Science topic of ‘Materials’, including natural and man made. If you would like to post any photos onto Tapestry of your child sorting materials at home for recycling we would love to see them and share them with the class.
