Year 1 - Tallies, arrays and coding

Wow! How are we in the Summer term already? Time certainly does fly when you are having fun! As we enter into the last term of Year 1 our excitement and lust for learning continues. This half term we are introducing all sorts of new topics of interest. The first new concept the children have encountered is ‘coding’ in our computer lessons. They are having fun creating instructions and building their own digital scenes and it is lovely to see the sense of achievement spread across their faces as the instructions they have given come to life on the screen. In Maths we have been talking about ‘arrays’ as an introduction to multiplication. The children have searched around the school grounds and at home to see how they are used in everyday life. Through practical and workbook activities we are revisiting groups, sorting, doubles, sharing, halves and quarters. Later on this term we are very excited to be visiting our local community pizza shop ‘Fan Fan’, where the children will be making their own pizza and them eating it for lunch. This is always such an enjoyable and fun filled trip so please keep an eye out in the Bulletin and Week In Pictures for more information. Our first story in our Talk for Writing lessons is the well known story ‘Handa’s surprise’. We have already taken part in an animal hunt to find the answers to the question “Who took the fruit from the basket?”. We are learning the actions for the story and have been tasting some of the fruits mentioned in the story and finding appropriate adjectives to describe the taste, texture and smell. Our favourite fruits were recorded in a tally chart and the results were then transferred in a bar graph to show the class results.
