Year 3 look at data,… | Independent Primary School Buckinghamshire

Year 3 look at data, data and more data!!

In Maths this week we have been looking at data, why we collect it and what we use it for.

On Monday, we took our learning outside in order to answer the question ‘What is the most popular car colour in Great Missenden ?’

The children collected data using tally charts and then devised questions for each other to answer. We then explored different ways of representing the data, firsty by creating a pictogram complete with a key before creating a bar chart.

We continued the data theme in our Topic lessons where we compared the weather in Castries, the capital city of St Lucia with the weather in London. We looked at the difference in monthly rainfall as well as monthly temperatures before using the information to answer questions such as ‘What is the difference in rainfall between Castries and London in September?’ Throughout the week we used the ‘BBC Weather’ website to compare the daily weather in Great Missenden and Castries discovering that on Monday the temperature in Great Missenden was 14C whilst in Castries it was more than double at 30C !!

Next week, we plan to develop our ICT skills when we create more bar charts using Google sheets.
