Year 4 - food chains, producers and consumers
Year 4 have been discovering food chains. We wondered why it was called a chain but then realised that it must be like on a bike where the chain has no end.
When we thought of food chains in nature we found that only plants are producers and all the other parts are consumers which included herbivores, carnivores, scavengers and our favourite flies. Flies, especially their maggots, eat lots of dead animals. It was only then that the nutrients went back to the plant as compost and the cycle started again.
Some of us did a food chain from the sea which included plankton (producer) and then lots of fish followed by predatory sharks and whales.
We can recommend the BBC bitesize challenge on creating food chains including a tundra and savannah habitat.
