Year 4 have the edge on perimeter and area

Maths this week has been a mixture of practical and abstract as Year 4 took on perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes. We investigated the perimeter of areas around the school and learned the importance of careful measurements to be able to calculate perimeter accurately. We then developed our understanding of perimeter by measuring the edges of rectangles, squares and compound shapes. Lastly, we learned how area can be measured by counting the number of squares in a rectilinear shape and that we can use arrays and our times tables knowledge to calculate area efficiently for rectangles, squares and composite rectilinear shapes.
