Year 4 - Making marvellous models
During their topic lesson this week, Year 4 learnt all about the structure of the Earth. This was an important concept for the children to understand, because it helps to explain why there are volcanoes and earthquakes. These events are a key focus this term as we are investigating natural disasters and their causes. The children were fascinated to learn that the Earth is made up of 4 different layers called the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. Many of them were surprised to discover that the Earth’s inner core is a huge metal ball, 2,500km wide and with temperatures of up to 6,000°C. Next, the children were challenged to create their own model or diagram to demonstrate what they had learnt about the Earth’s structure. They came up with lots of interesting and inventive ways of doing this, including using lego, modelling clay and even an avocado!
