Year 5 study non-reversible changes

We have started this Term with some ‘Non-Reversible’ Changes. We looked at some simple chemical reactions such as a Vitamin C Tablet being added to water and then turned to burning - the classic non-reversible change. The children were taken through the safety briefing and went on to burn 6 different materials, these being small pieces of: paper, string, woven cotton, cardboard, wood and cotton wool. The objective was to observe and then describe how each material burned and what remained at the end of the burning; all were amazed to see the cotton wool ‘disappear’ in the process. The children then reflected on what they had seen in each case.
