Chiltern and South Bucks Preliminary Round - Thursday 18th September

With St Mary (Amersham) withdrawing from this competition it left two of the remaining four teams a good opportunity of qualifying. Gateway’s opening match saw two very evenly matched sides lock horns. Little Chalfont had the best chance to score in the second half but Freddy B saved a shot from two metres. Will N came close at the other end, nudging a shot just inches wide. With a few minutes remaining a long clearance put Will through again to open the scoring and win this bruising encounter.

Gateway settled to play some good passing football in this match and harried the opposition into mistakes which they duly punished with some precision finishing. Jack W scored a lovely long range effort that looped over the head of the stranded keeper and Gateway mounted a succession of threatening attacks. Harry O scored his first goal for the school.

In the last game which also proved to be hard fought and physical Gateway did enough to stifle the opposition but began to look a little weary. Holmer Green had the clearer chances but some brave and agile goalkeeping and defensive work kept Gateway in the match. Both teams could have scored but it ended 0-0 and Gateway ran out group winners and qualified for the finals along with Prestwood. The boys deserve praise for their determination and teamwork it was a great start to the season.
