Cross-Country Update, Queenswood Friday 13 March

With it being Friday 13th the superstitious staff and children travelling to Queenswood School, Hatfield for an inter-schools cross-country meet, might have been expecting trouble of some sort at this event. It was only after the first two runs had taken place: Year 3-4 girls and 3-4 boys that murmurings that one school (not ours!) had entered their runners into the wrong age category. This was later confirmed, giving the organisers an almighty headache of having to run the competition whilst altering all the scores from the two previous races.

When the individual results came through it appeared that Gateway had several individual medal places (Top 3) and a strong chance of winning the u9’s competition. On paper, it seemed that Gateway boys had an unbeatable score 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th (Gateway also came 8th and 9th but only the 1st four runners counted). When the cup was presented, Gateway was unplaced. It was apparent that in the rush to give out medals and cups something else had added to the confusion with the scoring process.

Happily, this has since been rectified and the organisers have contacted us to apologise for the hiccup in proceedings and have acknowledge that the Y4 boys did win their section and the cup. As of writing, we are waiting for a full set of results to see how the rest of the children got on. We hope to add a further update before the Easter break. HJ
