House Athletics Competition

Sports DayHouse Athletics Competition April -July

For the first time in Gateway’s history the format for Sports Day changed allowing Y3 to compete in the field events, at school, and join the senior children at the Misbourne School athletics track.

From April to July, all the children compete in 6 field events (jumping and throwing ) with the top 3 girls and boys in each year group scoring points for their House. These points are added to the running events to give the overall totals.

Field Event totals Barnardo 76, Brunel 78, Jenner 58, Seacole 80

Despite booking the athletics track and facilities earlier in the year and receiving confirmation of our new start times via email and phone (and liaising closely with the Misbourne’s PE Department) it appears that, unfortunately, someone in their school office was unaware that this event was taking place. Following their safeguarding policy, they did not want to let anyone on site until the Misborne children had finished using the field. We would like to pass on apologises for any inconvenience this caused.

The Misborne’s running track looked in superb condition but the warm weather posed a problem for the runners, and spectators alike, as shade was at a premium. Thankfully a slight breeze and some cloud cover helped keep the temperature down a little. All the children participated in the sprints, trying their best to win and there were some very close finishes. During the day, all the 500m runners completed the course successfully and gradually recovered from this demanding race; some of the children even admitted to enjoying the event and asked if they could run it again!

Year 3 and 4 totals Barnardo 187 (263) Brunel 200, (278) Jenner 198, (255) Seacole 169 (249)

The competition was extremely close after the final Year 3 and 4 relays with a margin of just 29 points separating all 4 teams. Brunel were enjoying a slender 15 point lead over Barnardo. During the Year 5 and 6 competition Brunel began to open up a lead in the 500m races and they extended this during the fun races and relays to retain the cup.

Year 5 and 6 totals Barnardo 194, (457) Brunel 247, (525) Jenner 184, (439) Seacole 223 (472)

Totals 457 525 439 472

Final position Barnardo 3rd, Brunel 1st, Jenner 4th, Seacole 2nd

The final result was revealed by Mrs La Farge and Mr Grosse presented the cup to Skye M and Zach R.

Congratulations go to all the children who participated.

A special mention goes to ex-pupils Sam and Peter K, who gave up time to help the PE staff set up equipment and man the fun races; Grace S (work experience) and Jessica P for scoring and Luc B for helping as a ‘runner’. Thanks also to all the staff and ex pupils who manned stations and equipment, helping the event to run so smoothly. We look forward to another successful season of athletics next year. (HJ)

With there being slightly more spectators for this event than expected, anyone who missed out on a Sports Day programme, containing a full list of the field events results, can pick one up from the PE office.
