ISA London North Athletics Championships (Bedford Stadium) 12th May

Nineteen schools gathered at Bedford International Stadium to compete in this year’s ISA London North Athletic Championships. Gateway sent a squad of 26 children selected from Years 4, 5 and 6. The results we have received are a little sketchy and we have asked for further clarification, there have been no confirmation of the qualifying heat results and we have done our best to piece these together. There were some excellent performances in the heats, especially in the relay, where Gateway managed to win 5 of their 6 races. They were unable to capture the same form in the finals but the Year 5 and 6 girls teams both came in Gold positions while the Y6 boys managed 3rd after leading most of the way but dropping the baton! The Year 4 girls were 4th.

Kie W and Savva N deserves special mention in the 600m, after rushing to the start line, after their race was combined with the girls’ heat. In a crowded start Savva was tripped and Kie stopped to check his running ‘partner’ was okay. Savva picked himself up and managed to finish with a badly grazed knee but pride in tact; Kie finished 9th and would surely have done better without this incident at the start.

Thanks go to Rushmoor School for organising the event and all the teachers who helped try to run and coordinate events, including Mrs Gunther and Tom Nicholson who were busy, officiating, on the finishing line. Thanks also to all the parents who turn up to cheer on the squad and chaperone children to their events.

National Finalists (Monday 19th June at Birmingham Alexandra Stadium)

Oakley D (600m), Abigail H (150m and 4 x 100m relay), Jemma T (4 x 100m relay) Amelia O (4 x 100 relay)

Ryan M (4 x 100m relay) Marea L (600M), Lillie J (4 x 100 relay), Penny D (4 x 100m relay), Lexie W (4 100m relay), Will SC-B (Long jump).

The Yr 6 Girls won their competition and the Yr 6 Boys were 2nd place. Year 5 girls were 3rd in their competition and the boys were 6th. In the Yr 4 event the girls were 5th and the boys joint 8th with 3 other schools.

The standard is always good and Gateway performed well to win lots of top 3 positions and sending 8 children through to the National Finals in Birmingham (19th June)! Congratulation to all the squad who gave their best and behaved so well, encouraging and supporting each other throughout the day.
