Reception - Practising writing and locking in number knowledge

This term has flown by. We can't believe it's almost Christmas! The children have been striving hard with their phonics and reading this half term, learning new sounds and applying their new knowledge to their literacy lessons. We have spent a lot of time enjoying creative writing through card making where they have been learning the structure of a card, writing birthday cards to Kipper the dog and making Christmas cards for family and friends too. We even wrote letters to Santa and took a stroll down to the village of Great Missenden to post them in the letterbox.

Throughout the weeks the children have also been working hard to learn their number bonds to 5 and recognise odd and even numbers. The pupils have had great fun using the numicon to recognise visually if the numbers are odd or even and they also enjoyed learning the odd and even rule- ‘if the number ends in 0,2,4,6 or 8 it is even and if the number ends in 1,3,5,7 or 9 it is odd’

A definite highlight to this half term was the fantastic Christmas performance the children put on for all their parents and grandparents. ‘Once upon a Christmas Eve’ really showcased the children’s talents in singing, acting and even dancing!

The children were fantastic at showing off their moves they had learnt with Miss Gallop in their PE lessons. Well done Reception class we are so proud of you.

In addition to the festive theme we had a lovely morning of baking stained glass star shaped biscuits for the children to hang as decorations on their Christmas trees (if they lasted the journey home). The children followed a set of instructions, mixed the ingredients together and added some magical dust to create the stained glass effect.

The ownership of learning and wonderful engagement in all the activities has been outstanding and we hope you all have a well earned rest ready for the new adventures set out for 2022.
