Local Schools’ Cross Country Meet , RAF Halton - Saturday 18 October

Gateway and Chalfont St Peter hosted the first local South Bucks schools’ cross country meet of the season, held at RAF Halton. This is the first in a series of four local events. Saturday’s meet was the largest event in the organisation’s history with 16 schools competing, represented by over a 1000 children, participating in 4 year groups. The course measured 1200m for year 3 and 4 with the senior course set at 1400m, including a long hill just after the ½ way stage. Sun and mild weather had been forecasted for the morning, earlier in the week, but grey clouds and a slight drizzle greeted the runners and spectators. Luckily the ground was firm and provided good conditions for running. Hundreds of spectators cheered on the runners creating a great atmosphere.

Medals were awarded to the top ten finishers with team positions calculated by adding the scores of the top three runners from each school. Medals are awarded to the first four schools.

In the first race of the day, (Year 3 Boys) George C paced himself well, coming 8th, Henry G was 22nd and Hugh P 42nd. In the girls’ competition Penny D ran with great determination to finish 5th, Marea L was 21st and Millie G 37th .

Last year’s winner in the Year 4 boys’ event was unavailable to run for Gateway this time out due to a family commitment, so it was pleasing to see the rest of the squad battling it out in his absence. Oliver L ran extremely well to finish in 3rd place, followed in by Harry N (20th) and Adam Y (22nd). These boys were 3rd in the Team event, a great result. In the girls’ race Jemma T was 7th, Lucy A 8th and Abigail H 10th; winning Team Gold for Gateway. All three of the girls improved on their positions from last year, despite the higher entry of runners.

In the Year 5 boys’ race Cormac N ran superbly to win the event; with 200m to go he wound up the pace and out sprinted a Beacon runner in a really exciting finish. Alex P finish 8th and Brandon N-T was 11th. This team also secured Gold for Gateway! In the girls’ competition Esme Y improved from last year’s 15th place to 5th and Daisy S also improved, coming to 14th. Jessica C pipped Isabella J for 22nd. The girls came 4th in the team event.

In Year 6, Zach R showed tremendous determination to hang on to 2nd place, in another sprint finish, as he battled it out over the last 250m. Will N and Sam A also ran well coming 24th and 27th respectively. Skye M impressed in the Year 6 competition coming 5th with Sophie A and Francesca N finishing shortly after in 24th and 32nd; gaining Team 4th medals.

Well done to all the runners who turned up to support the school, many for the first time and some returning from injury; it was an achievement just to get round the course. It was a fantastic morning with lots of great performances throughout the squad. Thanks go to parents and Mrs La Farge for supporting the children and helping to dismantle the course and tidy up after the racing was over.

The next inter school event will be held at Chartridge Junior School, 22 November, with the same start times and race order so please keep an eye on the Sports Notice Board for team selection and race information nearer the date. Selected runners will all receive an information letter, as usual.

Under 11s Football Great Missenden v Gateway - Wednesday 22 October

Gateway played local rivals Great Missenden meaning that many of the boys were playing against close friends from outside school or team mates from weekend football. It was a high energy match with Missenden having slightly more possession but Gateway looking dangerous in attack. After 10 minutes of pressure, it was Gateway who broke on the counter-attack with a slick, free flowing move that saw Will N shoot across the box and beat the keeper with Dylan B tapping the ball over the line, to make sure of the goal.

Alex P (first-half debut) and Jack Wa played solidly in defence with Fred B looking confidence in goal. The midfield worked hard to win the ball but Missenden were constantly probing for the equaliser.
