Sports - a round up of last term
15th January 2016
The end of last term came around very quickly and as we start a new term it's good to look back at some of the highlights. In lessons we focused on the physical literacy journey and developing FUNdamental movement skills, whilst our games' afternoons focused on developing sports specific skills in invasion games.
Fixtures wise it was an extremely busy term, from football and rugby to netball, cross-country and swimming. Over 60 per cent of the children in years 3-6 represented Gateway in one or more sporting events this term. In our Seniors, this number increased to 75 per cent with some of them representing the school up to 12 times across 4 sports.
This term is shaping up in a similar fashion with more opportunities to represent the school in fixtures in a range of sports. We have the ISA competitions in netball, football and cross-country to look forward to as well as other competitions. In the ISA swimming gala, Jess C and Lucy A received gold in their races and will be going through to the Nationals.
Highlights for me last term have been reintroducing rugby into our curriculum and extra curriculum programme and playing some well established teams such as Thorpe House and Berkhamstead. I cannot speak about highlights without mentioning how well our cross-country teams have trained and performed this term. Across all years we have had great success both individually and as teams. The squad were awarded the Aperghis Cup and crowned Primary champions at the Wycombe Phoenix Schools cross-country event, early in the term.
We believe that friendly competition can be a really positive experience. If channelled correctly, it can be a child’s first experience of camaraderie, helping to build and bond friendships as well as developing their ability to persevere when the going gets tough. Our House sports allow us to give every child that feeling of healthy competition and working their hardest for their team.
The PE Dept would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for your constant support with Gateway Sport. Whether coming to watch a game in the evening, bringing runners to a freezing cross-country morning, offering a helping hand with a club or being a taxi service for all the sports your child does outside school, we are extremely grateful.
