Take One Picture

Take One Picture

The anticipation has been building at school over the past weeks for this year's painting of choice for Take One Picture 2018. This week the wait was over as the teachers introduced the painting to the children in their own creative ways. Drum roll....this year our painting of choice is " Experiment on a bird in an air pump" by Joseph Wright of Derby 1768 and it can be found in room 34 of the National Gallery. On the INSET day, all the staff went to London to stand before the painting in person; they made drawings, created poetry and mirrored hand gestures to name a few activities! A whole day of training later and the staff a raring to go! We hope the children love the main theme of scientific discovery during this year's project. Joseph Wright of Derby was a member of the Enlightenment movement and in his painting, uses the travelling scientist to draw us into the drama of the evening scene in the candlelit room and perhaps challenges our own thinking on the topic of new scientific breakthroughs - are all discoveries morally acceptable?. It would be wonderful for the children to see this painting up close; it is a large painting and very awe inspiring. Out of interest, it hangs in room 34 close to last year's Take One Picture, " The Graham Children" by William Hogarth so a great opportunity to see them both! Happy half term!
