Year 1 - onomatopeias and stinky smells

This week we have enjoyed learning about onomatopoeias in English, we had our own firework display in the classroom! We wrote firework poems using onomatopoeias and added movement to the poems we read. In Maths we have been focussing on subtraction and finding the difference. We solved problems using resources and pictorial methods.

The children have had another busy week and settled back quickly after half term. In science their noses were busy identifying and describing 'Smells', as part of Our Senses topic. And we certainly had a smelly classroom by the end of it. They had to try and identify different smells such as vinegar, onion, lavender and cumin. We then listed all the adjectives we could such as smelly, perfumed, fresh, tasty, stinky and pongy. There was much discussion as to whether the smells were enjoyable or not. They sorted and grouped the food according to likes and dislikes...which varied a lot!
