Year 2 immerse themselves in Roald Dahl's book The Minpins
13th September 2019

It hardly seems possible that this is the end of our first full week back at school. The children have all settled in so well and are already applying themselves with great enthusiasm to all aspects of their learning. We have begun our English topic of Roald Dahl by immersing ourselves in his final book the Minpins. The children wrote some wonderful descriptions ‘I could hear crickets chirping’ wrote Toby. Eliza saw ‘Stretchy vines hanging from the trees’ and there were even some ‘big, black beetles scuttling’ Megan wrote. We have also taken great delight in imagining we are Little Billy in the Forest during Drama and Forest school lessons. What might we see, hear, smell and how might we feel as we realise we are not alone!
In Maths we have been doing lots of work on number and place value, thinking about the value of each digit in a 2 digit number and partitioning into tens and ones using a variety of practical equipment. We have agreed that grouping by 10 is a more efficient way of counting large numbers than counting in 1’s and looking for patterns when counting in 5’s and 10’s.
