Year 2 - Oh we do like to be beside the seaside

Year 2 certainly likes to be beside the seaside, as their sterling performance in the end of year production demonstrated! They sang, danced and acted with such gusto; all of their teachers were extremely proud of their hard work and effort. In the classroom, our Seaside: Past and Present topic has continued to inspire some top quality learning and discussion. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Chris who is a Punch and Judy performer. As well as giving us a history of Punch and Judy shows, he also performed one for us.

Another source of excitement was the arrival of a special letter from Mr Grinling, the lighthouse keeper in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. After reading his letter, the Year 2 children investigated the features of letters and confidently explained why each feature is important. They then used what they had learned to create their own letters, showing quite how much progress they have made in their writing this year.

In Maths, we have continued our work on telling the time. It’s always a challenge to learn to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes but the Year 2 children have approached it with their usual enthusiasm. They have even been able to say what time it would be an hour later or an hour earlier.

Linking to our work on growing up in Science last term, we have been focusing on the changes that happen to our bodies as we get older in Learning for Life. As the children’s understanding has grown, we have also considered what milestones we mark as we grow older, such as learning to walk or starting school. Our RE lessons have consolidated this understanding, as we have focused on the rites of passage that Jewish children experience when they celebrate the Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah. What a pleasure it has been to teach such a lively, curious and kind-hearted bunch of children. They loved their day with their new teachers and are more than ready to move up into Year 3.
