Years 5 and 6 enjoy open-air performance of Richard III
20th May 2016
On the evening of Thursday 19th, four members of staff and thirty Year 5 and 6 children went to watch Richard III in the grounds of Pipers Corner School. This was our third visit to the Fourways Theatre open air production and it proved to be just as enjoyable as the previous two shows.
This is a tricky play for children to follow, but we had studied the story at school and the children had a good understanding of the plot. Fourways re-set the play in a circus ring with Richard prepared to go to any lengths to become ringmaster. The malevolence of the plotting Richard and Buckingham was enhanced by their ghoulish clown make up. There were moments of hilarity and some of violence, all handled perfectly for a mixed-aged audience. The actors brought the play to life for us brilliantly and the children were captivated throughout.
The weather was cold and windy, but this seemed to add to the atmosphere. Luckily, the rain held off and the actors escaped a soaking. The children behaved impeccably, even when they were fully loaded with sugar after the interval!
This yearly production is becoming something of a tradition for our seniors and I anticipate it with great excitement. I thoroughly recommend that next year's Year 5 group join me. I wonder what Fourways have in store for us next May!
