Year 5 design and construct land yachts

In DT this week, the first group of children have come to the end of their project to design and construct a land yacht. The final parts were added, the wheels! The children decided whether to have small, medium or large wheels, considering the size of their land yacht, the weight it may hold and the surface it would travel across.

Time to test the land yachts. Despite the weather not being as windy as hoped, Mr Phil saved the day with the use of his leaf blower! It was fantastic to see how each land yacht travelled with a large ‘gust of wind’.

After testing the land yachts the children will evaluate how successful their design has been, suggesting what types of modifications would be necessary to improve it’s performance.
