Year 5 get factual in English
22nd January 2016
This week has seen Year 5 continue their exploration of all things Michael Murpurgo. As well as continuing to enjoy their shared reading of Kensuke’s Kingdom, they have been planning their own booklets about Morpurgo, to add to the library’s collection of non-fiction.
They started by examining how other non-fiction books were structured, with some lively debate about what made them interesting. Having concluded that a clear structure, formal language, engaging pictures and lots of facts were required, they proceeded to start to write their own versions.
Some interesting information has been unearthed. As well as learning that Morpurgo has written over 120 books, been the Children’s Laureate, and established a children’s charity, 5AB also discovered that one of his favourite food is prawns. They already knew (from a trip to the Roald Dahl Museum) that prawns are Roald Dahl’s favourite food. Fish pie is apparently a favourite of Dick King-Smith. We think we might be onto something…
Next time you are in the library, come and see our collection of non-fiction books about Morpurgo. We promise an educational, and entertaining, read.
