Year 5 maths challenge
3rd May 2019

Four children from Year 5 participated in a Mathematics Challenge at Davenies this week. They solved puzzles at six stations working on different mathematical tasks. The tasks included the use of dice, pentominoes, playing cards, dominoes, tangrams and counters and involved numbers, timetables and shapes. For example,
Broken Calculators: Can you use the keys only once:
1, 3, 4, 6, 7, = and the operations +, - to make 40?
Make 24: Can you use the numbers 1, 3, 7, 8
only once and any number operation to make 24?
Working in pairs, the two teams worked through six problems with eight minutes at each station. They gained points as they submitted their answers before moving onto the next task. The final round brought together the earlier activities as the children worked through multiple choice questions.
Both teams showed great resilience and determination as they worked collaboratively under the time pressure.
Children left to right: Millie G, Katrina B, Isaac S and Charlie M.
