Year 5 science 'May the force be with you'

In Senior Science we have been exploring various Forces. We have measured the force of gravity and taken a look at friction, enjoying the use of our Newtonmeters. We then stretched a spring and measured it in such a way as to create our own Newtonmeters. This week we have been considering Air Resistance and thought about why a feather and a hammer fall at the same rate on the Moon! By dropping spinners, with various ‘loads’, the children had to explain the different rates of falling - in the knowledge that weight should make no difference! In the coming lessons, we will be setting up Levers and Pulleys and trying to work out how they help us when lifting heavy loads. Quite a journey - it is certainly true that forces are all around us!
