Year 5 work on their mental addition and subtraction techniques

This week Year 5 have been working on developing their mental addition and subtraction. We have discussed a variety of different strategies that can be employ to make the process easier. The children have also extended their use of rounding to to use estimates to check their answers. On Friday we played a game where the children added two or three numbers and used estimates to check their answers. This work can be consolidated in a number of ways at home by using questions such "roughly how much have I spent" or "how much change will I get from £1 or £5" when you go shopping for a few items.
