Year 6 learn about the classification of living things

This half term we have been learning about the Classification of living things. The mnemonic ‘King Philip Came Over For Ginger Snaps’ was useful to help us remember the 7 levels - ‘Kingdom’ through to ‘Species’. We looked at the groups of Vertebrates and Invertebrates in the Animal Kingdom, spending time on the Arthropods in particular. The children were all surprised to find Scorpions in with Spiders as part of the Arachnids! We then moved onto the Plant Kingdom and the children designed their own Garden Centres by grouping 30 different plants. Next stop - Micro-organisms, where we will be proving that yeast is indeed a living thing that feeds and respires!
