Year 6 Second Cup Match - Tuesday 31 October

The boys set off early afternoon to the depths of Burnham Beeches to cross swords with St Peter’s in this Halloween cup fixture hoping to finish before darkness fell.

Gateway started brightly, knocking the ball well, despite the ankle deep grass. The team pushed forward dominating in attack, ghosting past the opposition at times to create some great scoring opportunities. After 10 minutes, it was the St Peter’s midfield, who drew first blood when their midfield sprang forward on the wing, crossing the ball into the box an eventually stabbing it home past the sprawling Fred H.

Gateway were not going to allow this match to turn into a horror show and renewed their attacks. After another spell of pressure saw, George C poked home a well deserved equaliser to breathe new life into the team.

In the second half, St Peter’s came back to haunt the Gateway by scoring an almost identical goal to their first; carving their way through the heart of the team and leaving the boys looking rather ashen faced.

With time running out, the situation looked grave, until Gateway shocked their opponents with a slick move of their own; George C appearing like phantom to fire home his second goal. After some tenacious tackling from Sam B, another magical move saw George C conjure up his hat-trick, laying the game (and SP keeper) to rest. A minute later, George left the field with a bloody lip from this bruising encounter. Both teams battled to the end in a spirited performance which was a real treat to spectate. Gateway progress to the quarter-finals in spring.

Squad: Fred H, Jame B, Fred W, Henry G, George C, Harrison J, Will St C-B, Sam B and Alex C.
