Year 6 study The Odyssey
9th November 2018

In their Classics lessons, Year 6 have been reading The Odyssey. They have prepared a class book, in which they have re-told some of the stories. The children have examined various aspects of ancient Greek culture, that is reflected in the story and have been learning about what it might have meant to be an ancient Greek.i
They have also examined the importance of the gods in daily life and learnt the reasons why some peoples were considered barbarian by the Greeks of Athens.
Today, they had a debate about autocracy and democracy which left the class divided! We have asked philosophical questions along the way, that might have been posed by Socrates himself and the children are beginning to understand how much we have inherited from this ancient civilization.
