Mrs Wood's Blog - Managing transitions

At Gateway the staff embrace every opportunity to help each child develop patterns of behavior that they can draw on throughout their lives. Our youngest learners, the Preschool children, are preparing to take their next step in the school journey. In Autumn term they will be moving from our Preschool classroom, located in the Early Years Unit, to the main house where they will be based until the end of Year 2. Despite this physical move happening in September, the Early Years team are busy planning and working with each child to ensure the transition is a gradual process rather than a big event. Through managing transitions to new classes carefully, we can ease the process of adjustment, reassuring both children and their families.

As a team, the Early Years specialists at Gateway have a multitude of skills, experience, abilities and ideas. We are currently innovating our curriculum to ensure each child’s uniqueness is recognised and celebrated. We strive to give them opportunities to interact in positive relationships and within enabling environments in order for them to engage and achieve. Currently, the Reception teachers are visiting the children in their classroom to read stories and get to know them.

When our youngest learners arrive in the Preschool they instantly become part of the Gateway family. They have access to all of the shared spaces within the school - including the library, the spacious music room, the tennis courts and the hall. They become familiar with the grounds, the staff and older children around school and as a result develop their confidence and communication skills. During these early months, we work hard to learn about each child - their interests, strengths and curiosities. We encourage and support a joy for investigating and learning. Our small class sizes mean we are uniquely placed to allow the children time to settle and flourish.
